FORMING SIMPLE SENTENCES IN IGBO

Similar to English, Igbo present tense word order is typically:

verbs

SVO

  • SUBJECT (I/He/They…etc)
  • VERB (to go/to be/…etc)
  • OBJECT (happiness(adjective)/park…etc)

 

So if I wanted to say I am a nice person. I would say:

A(I) bu m(am) ezigbo(a good) mmadu(person).

Below are some examples of Igbo verb conjugation using the verb (to be)

IGBO ENGLISH
ỊMARA MMA – TO BE GOOD LOOKING
Amara m mma I am good looking
Ị mara mma You are good looking
Ọ mara mma He/she/it is good looking
Anyị mara mma We are (group) good looking
Anyị machara mma We are (individually) good looking

Nyé m ākā gi. Give me your hand
 
Gwà m áhà (/áfà) gí. Tell me your name
 
Gbá yā nkịtị. Pay him/her no attention (Ignore him/her)
 
Kwé m n’ākā. Shake my hand
 
Sí ébé à. Go/come this way.
Hụ (/F) nà íhé(/ife) níīlē (/níīnē) gàrà nkè ọmá. See to it that everything goes well
