How many Igbo people are there in Nigeria?

As a developing nation with many rural and disconnected regions, establishing accurate numbers for Nigeria’s demographics is challenging. There are arguments on both sides, some saying that the population numbers are inflated, and others claim they are underestimated.

With that said, here are some stats from established sources.

According to these sources, 15.2 – 18% of the total population in Nigeria is Igbo.

The CIA fact book states 15.2%, whilst other sources say 18%.

As of October 2022, Nigeria’s population is estimated to be between 211 million (World Bank) and 225 million (CIA).

Meaning there are between 32 and 40 million Igbos. (Average = 36 million)
