Both the flags of Ghana and Biafra draw inspiration from the Pan-African colour schemes. Ghana’s flag is based on the traditional Pan-African colours borrowed from Ethiopia’s flag, which includes red, gold, and green. Ethiopia is the only African country that was never colonised, and its tricolour has become a symbol of the African fight for independence.
Ghana’s adoption of the colour scheme influenced several other African nations. On the other hand, the Biafran flag takes inspiration from Marcus Garvey’s Universal Negro Improvement Pan-African flag and incorporates the colours red, black, and green, which symbolise the struggle for black liberation.
